The New BagJump!
Posted by Mike & Julie Saemisch on January 26, 2013
Brian Head Resort’s new ownership is starting to bring new and exciting changes to Brian Head. One of the first is the amazing “Bag Jump” at the base of Giant Steps. It is a 50x50 foot bag that inflates to a 12 foot height and is placed behind a new kicker to send skiers and riders into the air for a surprisingly gentle landing. It is the first one in Utah and one of just a few in the entire western US.
Last Friday, the day before the jump was open to the public, the Bag Jump was inflated and a select group of testers were allowed to give it a try. At first, each was a bit tentative since they had never done this before, but in no time at all, there were an amazing set of tricks (and attempted tricks) being thrown. The testers helped refine the takeoff to prepare it for the public. There were some of the biggest smiles of the season so far!
Our friend Fern said, "The first time I did the jump I was pretty nervous...it is a bit intimidating looking!! But after the first straight air.. I felt much more confident in the bag taking the brunt of my fall due its forgiveness... once I felt confident and used to the jump's pop it was time for back flips and cork 3s!!". You could see Fern and others progress rapidly. Some had never even been off a jump before and did it multiple times. Here Fern shows how the jump is exited.
This new feature is certainly going to be a must-do for many visitors of all ages. So, did these retirees give it a try? Well, not yet. The hardest part appears to be unclicking your bindings on the bag so you can walk off, and we need to see if that is possible with our creaky knees (and no poles). We have some other skis with easier bindings, so stay tuned - the bucket list just got an item added!
